Meditation Practices For Busy Lifestyles – I’m Yuta Hasumi, one of the Medito Foundation’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board members and a huge fan of Medito.
I lived in Tokyo for over 30 years and moved to London almost 4 years ago. Living in London, I am fascinated every day by its diverse people, cultures and environments. In comparison, Japan is somewhat homogeneous – Japan has a population of 128 million, but only 2 million are non-Japanese.
Meditation Practices For Busy Lifestyles
I’m sure some of you like living in busy and colorful cities like me, or maybe you like being surrounded by nature. What does your daily life look like?
World Meditation Day May 21: Activity And Health Benefits
Personally, I’ve lived in Tokyo and London, both capital cities, I’m used to a hectic lifestyle, juggling between business and personal obligations, and I regret finding excuses like “I don’t have time to think”. In my work as an HR consultant, I regularly provide career advice and guidance.
People usually pause when asked about their career aspirations unless they deliberately think about them on a regular basis. I often tell them that we need to take time to do nothing to refresh our minds, to think deeply about ourselves – our priorities in life, career aspirations, personal ambitions and dreams.
We’re always online these days (especially with the rapid increase in remote work during the pandemic). We are increasingly expected to be constantly available for work and at the same time feel pressured to be active on social media in addition to taking care of ourselves and our families… We feel pressured to always be connected with the world
Although I love the city lifestyle, I often feel anxious about being pressed for time and overwhelmed by the clutter in front of me. I always feel busy and anxious if I don’t have enough time, which makes me feel like I can’t think clearly. Have you ever experienced similar feelings?
Colour Breathing: 3-minute Guided Meditation
For the first 6 months after I moved to London, I was excited but felt like I didn’t have time to breathe. I was exhausted by the end. I wondered how I usually relax my mind; What would I do if I was back in Tokyo but not doing the usual busy work in this new London. I am reminded of the importance of appreciating the “beauty of silence” – something that is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.
It is also an essential component of meditation and something I can apply in my daily life. This is normal in Japan, but I didn’t fully notice or appreciate it until I left Japan and experienced a new culture. How often do you hear silence?
There is an old pond in the mountain. In this silent landscape, a frog breaks the silence with a splashing sound in the water, then silence returns.
This haiku is a similar concept to the first one. When the poet went to Risshaku-dera mountain temple in the summer, a cicada uttered a terrible scream. He found the silence elegant when he stopped singing.
The Benefits Of Mindfulness And Meditation For Older Adults
Japan loves silence and has integrated it into our culture in activities such as Zen, haiku, Noh dance and calligraphy – all of which can become part of a meditative practice. They usually spend some time meditating according to the Japanese tradition.
It’s a shame that people today tend to forget that. This is why meditation and mindfulness are so important in the world to find quiet moments to focus on yourself.
I have practically integrated the beauty of Japanese silence into my daily life, and I encourage you to do the same. One method I use is the tea ceremony, where I carefully prepare and drink a cup of matcha tea. It makes me silent for 30 minutes every day.
To enjoy your own tea ceremony, pour 1 teaspoon of matcha into a cup, add 100ml of hot water and stir vigorously in a zigzag motion until the tea is smooth and lump-free.

As you stir your matcha tea, pay attention to the sound of the water swirling in the bowl, opening your mind to a clear awareness of the moment. Pay attention to the aroma of freshly ground tea leaves and matcha – let it help you relax and concentrate.
Take some quiet, distraction-free time to enjoy each sip of tea and the feelings and emotions it evokes.
Sometimes I miss sitting down for a formal meditation session, but almost anything can become a meditation if you give it your full attention with clarity and presence. Away from the hustle and bustle of work, family and social life, how about incorporating meditation into your lifestyle by taking some quiet time to brew matcha tea each day? Traditionally, tea ceremonies are held for our important guests. Why not practice making matcha tea now and invite your meditation friend to a ceremony when the pandemic situation is over!
